Toy Story 5 (2026) Review

hello and welcome to Movies on the Side.

This is Steven Robles.

And this is Nate Baranaski.

And this week we're reviewing a little
movie called Toy Story Five,

and we'd like to welcome you to our
biannual episode of Movies on the Side.

Also, Nate though, congratulations.

This is our two hundred and fiftieth
episode of Movies on the Side.

Wow.

Isn't that amazing? At this rate,

we will hit one thousand episodes when we
turn six hundred and thirty seven years

old. So I I think we'll do it.

Absolutely. Can't wait to be

doing it with you with our cryoheads.

Okay we're gonna freeze ourselves.

Nate, Toy Story Five. We're gonna talk
about that in a minute,

but we we we've not been able to catch up
outside of the podcast.

So we're just I wanna do it right here
with you.

Just it's and

All right, I'm ready.

and it's related because Toy Story Five,

it's a very technology is the enemy in
this movie,

you know, in a way.

kinda?

Kinda we'll get to that because it ch you
know,

I think the movie does a good job of
parsing th threading that needle,

as you say.

But I don't know, just wanna get your
current feelings on AI,

you know, how you feeling about ~ how
endangered we are as a species.

have you tried Muse? Have you

Yeah. Well

tried Muse?

I have not yet. So I listened

Okay, that's fine. It's probably better
off.

Better off.

to a show called Primary Technology where
my

never heard of

favorite you t ~ but my favorite host,

Mm. Wow. Mm-hmm.

Jason Aiton, reviews the tech with his
partner,

Yeah.

Steven Roblis.

And so that's how I get all my tech news
these days.

Sure, sure sure.

I am so cautious about AI.

Currently, but I'm trying to hold like I
think a wise viewpoint

is basically one that's just filled with
dissonance all the time.

I mean, I probably

Mm.

skew a little bit more negative,

but then on

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

just the other day, I was doing a long
drive and I had some time

to brainstorm, so I just pulled up Chat
GPT voice memo and I said,

Okay.

like,

you know what?

Let's you and me meal plan this week.

I want a meal plan, I want it to be
healthy,

I want it to be like and I gave it all
these parameters and I just chatted with

the with the AI for like forty five
minutes and came up with a grocery

~ my.

list and a whole plan for the week.

Excuse me.

And I found myself

being like, this is pretty useful.

And like I wasn't gonna be doing anything
else interesting while driving.

So like that is good. ~ do I think that
there are ~ do I trust

the people in charge? No. Do I think that
we're in like the greatest hands

of people? No. Do I hope that collectively
that we as humans will like

if something gets really, really
dystopian,

we could bond together and like

say like enough is enough. A little bit
yes.

Also no. okay.

Also yeah. Also no a little bit yes.

I have a little bit of hope that like we
will kind of see it and be like,

hey, like we don't smoke as a society.

Sure, sure.

Collectively we know like we we do smoke,

but we don't say that like this is great
for us as a society.

And I like think yeah. So that is

Yeah, yeah. I

my

Blah blah blah blah blah thoughts.

Well, I'll just I'll just ask

one one question, one follow up.

Where how would you compare your trust
level to the AI and the people that run
it?

Would you trust them

Mm-hmm.

more or someone who is cooking a casserole
and bringing it to the work potluck,

but they have a lot of cats, like double
digit cats in their home.

Which which would you trust more?

Eating that casserole.

Casserole

casserole person, because although you're
gonna get some hair,

Right. really?

just like how you get spiders in every
chocolate bar,

I do trust someone who has a lot of cats
to also have a lot

of good casserole recipes. So I would say
casserole is

Sure, sure.

a you know, it doesn't take the what's the
what's the green thumb version

for cooking? Is there a color thumb that ~
purple thumb?

I don't think it's a thumb. I th it's

Is it like a

it's a chef's ha it's a

Stuck in your thumb, pulled out a plum.

shf's hat, a p feather in your cap.

Yeah. Mm.

Yeah, I I don't think casserole requires a
huge

cooking prowess. It just needs plenty of
oils,

plenty of fats, plenty of cheese,

Sure, sure. It's it's so

and you got yourself a casserole.

So yeah.

it's ~ like a devil you know, devil you
don't problem too,

you know what I mean? Like if you know
they have a lot of cats,

you kinda the worst can be expected.

But will they you know

Just hair. I mean just hair.

Well, hopefully, but yeah, yeah,

you know what mean. Okay. I

yeah.

just want to get your thoughts on that
because there's technology in this movie.

And I would like to know, first of all,

I saw this movie with my entire family.

We all went to the theater to watch Toy
Story 5,

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

and

You know, I was pleasantly surprised that
everybody was just as into

it because Toy Story still got it.

And I wanna hear your answer to this
question much later,

but should this be the last Toy Story is
an interesting I would like to

I would like your take on that.

it won't be but should

It won't it won't be. So I don't know why
I would even like it won't be.

it but should it be? Sh

But should it be?

that'd be the question. But I'll let you
the let you ponder that.

But how did you consume this movie,

Toy Story Five?

I consumed it by myself on the couch at
like nine o'clock last night.

So low viewing, okay.

I I believe Jill came into the room at
some point in time and I

was crying a little bit.

Just a little bit. And I watched

Okay. How yeah, sure.

most of it last night and then the rest of
it I watched on my phone

in the pickup line for my son from
kindergarten.

As Pixar intended. Absolutely.

As they intended. Stephen, I have

As Andrew Stanton intended. Yeah.

something a little controversial to say.

I'd love to hear it. I'd love to hear it.

I not sure it's a great movie.

Okay. Now yeah. Okay,

But here's the thing. no, I I need I need
to preface this.

Pixar

go ahead. Explain yourself.

knows how to pull my heartstrings.

They've been

Of course.

doing it for 30 years or whatever.

Like

Just about, yeah.

they know. But I'm maybe it was a script
thing.

Maybe like I found the actual like toy
elements where I feel like I used

to think this was sort of a heartwarming
thing and like.

I cared about Woody and Buzz and like that
whole gang of now they're kind of like,

this is a fun inclusion of like new toys
or a fun like ~

Sure.

it's like nostalgia plays of like,

yeah, that toy, that's cool.

Yes.

I actually and again, maybe that's me.

Maybe the magic has gone in me.

I didn't find them to be particularly
charming or interesting.

What I did, however, connect with

Was the humans in this movie and the
little girls and how they

Yes.

end up getting gaslit by the toys to
become friends.

But like

Yes.

that that was definitely the part that I
connected with the most is and

I had a whole I'd love to have a
discussion about kids getting rejected

and their relationship to tech and all of
this.

To me,

We will.

that was the meat of this movie.

Yeah.

I'm not sure like you can play when.

And somebody loves you and it will make me
feel a little sad for Jesse,

but the toys did not move me at all in
this movie.

There was you know, we have new toys.

Conan O'Brien as Smarty Pants,

I think was he was funny. It's fine.

I didn't find him that funny.

Not hilarious. I thought it was fine.

I like hearing Conan O'Brien just do Conan
O'Brien,

just be himself. But it was it wasn't
laugh out loud funny.

Yeah. I w it wa

I'll give you that.

I mean, yeah, it was kinda cool that he
was like a potty trading device,

but I didn't feel like any

Yes.

of the lines were like, Wow, that's really
clever.

Yeah. And you know it's so Jesse's kind of
like the main one of the main characters,

I would say.

Yeah.

And ~ for Woody and Buzz, I know if you
saw the behind the scenes,

but Tim Allen said he had to do like vocal
training to get his voice.

Maybe it was Tom Hanks, maybe both of
them,

had to like Yeah, to get their to get
their voice back to like younger.

Back to the deepness of it. I mean,

all these voice actors

are old now. Which is like that coming

Yes.

you know, coming back to AI and stuff like
that.

I if you're Disney slash Pixar,

do you have are you sneaking in
conversations at the end of these movies?

Like this went really well. We would love
to keep Buzz Lightyear alive

in our hearts forever.

And we would love to capture your voice
like Ursula.

What do you think?

Well, so they're

both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are seventy
and older.

Tom Hanks is now seventy. Tim Allen is
seventy-three.

Is older.

Is older. They this is like Disney has
done this in the Obi-Wan series with

James Earl Jones.

James Earl Jones' voice was sampled and
used AI to create that Darth Wade Vader

voice with also a voice actor.

It was kind of conjunction. So it wasn't
like a complete AI generative thing.

But

Again, the question I want to get to later
is should they and will they make another

one? If they want Buzz and Woody to be in
it,

I feel like they would have to start
skewing more that direction so

it still sounds like them. Or just move
past those characters,

which I don't know, is has th is there a
series,

a movie series that has gone on long
enough where like characters phase

out and new ones come in? I mean,

I'm sure.

Avengers, I guess, is kind of like that,

but they're still bringing back Robert
Tony Jr.

Yeah. Yeah,

and

Chris Evans, so maybe not. Didn't go well.

you're right. It d apparently didn't go
well.

I mean, they tried to transition everyone
out.

Now they're all back.

It didn't go well. So I don't know.

I I feel like it would be it would be
awkward for Disney to be like,

Yeah, we got AI Woody. I feel like people
would toy like pitch like pitchforks

and torches ~ down to the whatever the
studios is.

I mean, I I think Woody

and Buzz, even in this movie, felt like
well they have to be in this movie 'cause

they're like the big faces. But I even
felt like their inclusion in this movie,

like there was not other than like,

it's it's the it's them. They didn't
really have much going they didn't do
much.

No. And honestly,

It like wasn't much going on.

there was a full s full circle moment.

The one part and I d I did I probably
cried three to four times during this
movie,

but one time was when the army of buzzes,

spoiler if you haven't seen this,

they're at the end of the movie on the
truck,

and then they all like push the button and
the drone propellers come out

and all the buzzes actually fly.

And it's a call back to the very first Toy
Story.

I got emotional about that. That was a
nice call back.

I mean that yes. It's pretty

But could also stand as a bookend,

like, all right, we're done now.

it's pretty cool. It also feels like I
just look at that as the like greatest
magic

trick of corporate nostalgia one could do
like call back time call back time

It there is a struggle. Okay, but here's
what's not a

Bring back

adult Sid

cere's what ~ here's what's here's what's
not a callback.

The I feel like this is the first Toy
Story where every previous

one commented socially on like real
emotions

and real situations that people might deal
with.

Mm-hmm.

This is the first time it felt like Toy
Story is commenting on an issue

of the day very directly, which is device

Right.

usage across the spectrum.

Because

Right.

we

got a cutscene of like a st a panning shot
of the neighborhood,

and you see kids and adults alike with
just the glowing blue on their face

in front of computers and tablets.

And it felt like the very first time Toy
Story was like,

all we're gonna make some statements here.

Yeah.

And I think it's clear at the the
beginning of the movie,

the statement is technology is the enemy
and it's all bad.

But I do think it comes around at the end
to kind of color that a little bit to say

It has its place, you know. What it what
are you thinking?

You're squinting there, you're squinting
at me.

I'm squinting a little bit just because,

Yeah.

like, I don't think if you're a multimedia
company,

even if you're a d if the director wants
to have sort of an anti-tech,

like, hey, we're better off without any of
this,

Right.

you you can't like there's a meta
conversation behind the scenes

of a giant corporation that is embracing
so much tech and

Sure.

you're

watching it on your tablet and they want
you to be streaming Disney Plus

at all time, you know, that sort of thing.

Yes, yes, yes.

It's

it is hard to be like, this is
problematic.

It doesn't really it just says this is a
problem.

The parents in this movie, I need to talk
about sort of their guardrails

for their I don't know how old this
daughter is supposed to be.

She looks to be like seven.

Yeah, I'll say yeah, I'd say seven or
eight,

Her with unfettered

yeah.

texting and I guess internet access in her
room?

~ well, careful,

What

careful. Be people have okay, so people
have feelings about this kind of stuff.

Because anytime I post about any kind of
screen time anything online,

no matter what age I say my kids are,

people are like, Wow, spying, you know,

controlling your over controlling your
kids,

overbearing parent much. I'm like,

my child might be seven years old.

You want me to give them full TikTok right
now?

That's the solution? That's the deal.

Yeah. I I guess I'm

~ and by the way, I don't know if you

not I guess maybe I'm not online enough to
care what people would think about

Well you can't care, Yake.

my opinion on the thing, but ~

but like this ~ movie clearly makes it out
to be like the not my opinion,

the the the movie clearly

Yes.

states that like this is harmful to the
friend making process in at least some
way.

Now it

Yes.

it dances the fine line of like these

Other kids weren't just they were kind of
mean and they weren't

the right friends for you. If you had

Right.

a true friend who you could relate to in
person,

getting them connected, like I don't think
it ~ 'cause for example,

the spoilers throughout Lily, the the lily
pad leapfrog device that the

The evil tablet, yes.

tech in this is so gobbledygook that can
connect to everything.

Like it's so clearly an iPad though.

Like what other tablet is that?

It's not an Amazon Fire tablet.

It's yeah. It well I think it has to not
be particularly a tablet because

you don't want to villainize but wait a
minute.

Right, right. Tim Cook

is on Disney's board, I believe.

Side note.

Is

the lily pad okay here's here's my
question for you.

You ready for this?

~ boy. Yeah, okay.

Is the lily pad bezel frame being

Hm. Yes.

sold by Disney to put on your iPad?

Is right now, is there I don't know.

Do you really not know? Do you really not
know?

I don't know this. Is there

official merch to turn your iPad into a
lilypad?

Nate, I don't know how much of this I
could talk about.

But they partnered with Belkin,

an accessory maker who makes a lot of
Apple accessories.

Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

And

yes, you can buy the Lillipad Belkin cover
for fifty dollars.

And it it does things. It's basically just
a case.

It's licensed by Disney.

But like the eyes wink or something?

Something like there's a kickstand.

Do we think that anthropomorphizing your
tablet with this cute little

frog who, I don't want people to forget,

attempts to end her existence in at least
some way because

she is ultimately bad for the girl?

Right.

Are we sure? I guess that's my question.

~ I mean at in the

I mean

end, if you fast forward to the end of
this movie,

it's all hunky dory. 'Cause it's like tech
has its place,

They're playing together, then

we use this

they quickly grab the tablet and take a
picture together like it's great

They take a s selfie, take a selfie.

for a selfie. Look, it's a

But then they go back but then they go
back

they play then they go back to playing
with like normal physical toys,

which to be clear rarely happens in real
life if there's a device in the room.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's

But that is what the kids choose to do.

it's just a it's completely healthy.

There's no screen time addiction.

There's no like our whole

Right.

time together, they have a a beautiful
relationship with the screen,

It's wonderful.

which

has never been said of myself or any of
the kids that I've ever known.

Can I just did you know, Nate?

I I just need to I need you to know that
this exists.

As the Lillipad iPad case exists,

Okay. huh.

did

you know you could open the Disney Plus
app and scroll like it's TikTok,

a vertical feed, but it's just clips of
Disney properties,

like a Hannah Montana clip right next to
Guardians

No

of the Galaxy, right next to Red,

right next to something else. Like you
could just scroll sh like it's reels.

But it's Disney Plus properties.

Did you know that existed? Well there you
go.

No, I did not. I mean it

Well there you go.

does it surprise me? No. Does not surprise
me.

No.

Here it so

I like I

like the feelings that it brings up inside
of me of like,

all right. I do want to help my kids play

and make real friends in real spaces and
connect them.

Yes.

I don't want to necessarily have my kids
rely upon technology in order to connect.

Cause I think that is the

Quick soapbox thing, my kids aren't old
enough to like have devices yet.

But like that is the ultimate like well I
have t they have to have these things

because other like if not they will be
left out.

I believe even her parents in this movie
were like,

We need to get her this tablet because

Yeah. Yes.

like she won't be able to make friends
without it or whatever.

The s one of the saddest moments of this
movie is when she go the little girl goes

to her the sleepover that she was invited
to by her friends.

She doesn't have a tablet and

~

is just completely decimated and just so
disappointed,

does not fit in, like and it's so sad
because that's also reality.

Like I don't know how much you experience
this but even like even up to

Guess not. I d not

yet.

To even like to older kids. Like when I
hear my,

you know, teenage kids relate to other
teenagers,

there's so much of like meme,

like current trending video conversation.

And they're not looking at their devices,

but they're talking about things that they
have seen.

And like it is if you don't have that
experience,

there is this awkward disconnect where
like if if let's just say

your kid was 16 years old and never
scrolled any social media ever,

to put them in a group of other 16 year
olds who have had access to all of that,

they

Right.

would be so it would be so difficult to
cross the divide and relate

to anything they're saying, to like

Sure.

talk about stuff like and not saying it
can't be done.

Like I guess Toy Story Five is trying to
imply like at the end of this,

like, no, no, you can if you if you

Just get together with another human being
of the same age,

you can find similar interests,

and it doesn't have to be connected tech
technology.

It does seem very hard in real life for
that to be the case,

especially as kids get older. So I don't
know.

Sure. Yeah. Yeah,

I don't have the answers to that,

~ nor do I pretend to know. I I will
attempt to do my best,

I guess, as a parent to like be smart and
help my kids thrive in whatever

way that I can. This movie makes the

Good luck, buddy. Good luck Yeah.

Bonnie's like finding of friends and
Blaze's finding of friends too,

the

Yeah.

most

devastatingly sad at times

my goodness, yes.

experience that

again I get a little bit upset at the
movie because I'm not sure it earns

it all the way. G because, like I said,

I'm not sure if the rest of it is like
great storytelling,

but this exact thing is so good

at making me like her big Pixar eyes
welling up.

And like her in

Sure.

the back seat getting the responses from
the other girls that she's like

a baby because she has toys is so sad.

Yeah. it's so sad. It's it's so s

so sad. And also the but and it also like
Toy Story understands like

the w just little things like how Buzz and
Woody unplug Lilypad from

the charger because they know it'll die
and then it won't be able to do anything.

Like just little things like that that Toy
Story know Pixar knows to put

in the plot as a device. It's kind of fun.

Like we all know that if you don't charge
your device overnight,

like it's over the next day.

And just to like use that as a ploy
against Lillipad,

like those are still enjoy and fun
moments.

But I will say after four now five Toy
Stories,

watching it does feel a little bit like I
see the formula a little bit,

like you can kind of see through the
matrix and you see like the conflict

is coming and then this is gonna happen
and then there's gonna be

a MacGuffin or something. Like Lillipad
can somehow download a software update.

And deploy it to these buzz light years on
the back of a truck,

even though no one has

Each each of

these buzz light years must cost six
hundred dollars.

All made by DJI, which are now banned
because you can't import them.

But that was my that was my biggest issue
was how is this Lillipad downloading

a software update and deploying it to
these Buzz Lightyears without even pairing

them via Bluetooth? That was my biggest
problem.

I wasn't

sure how this yeah, let's let's go to tech
corner here.

I know you talk

Please.

about tech all the time, but I think it's
very important we discuss the tech

of this movie. So we have SmartyPants
voiced by Conan O'Brien,

is a

Yes, yes.

potty training device that I think is just

Yes.

like you press a button like I went number
one or number two,

and then it like gives you like a
celebratory thing.

Something like that, yes.

Has a type of techno okay, so

Then Smarty Pants is connected to a Hippo
GPS character voiced

by Craig Robinson and a

Yes, yes.

like camera.

That's right. It's like a Voltron of toys.

Basically like Yeah.

And somehow this toilet toy has just

Yes.

like internet texting abilities?

Talk talk me through how this works.

Is this a Wi Fi enabled s ~ toilet
training

toilet.

thing?

This this part was problematic and then as
a tech person

Actually

it wasn't even on Wi Fi all the time.

It I think it sent some messages

No.

out by the tire swing. So it's got it's
it's connected to a cellular service,

There's some yeah, the the cellu

right?

the cellular data was yeah, it tr that all
of that troubled me,

Nate, and I needed to turn that part of my
brain off.

And

Mm-hmm.

not like this this toilet toy does not
have Starlink internet built in.

You know what I mean? Like this is not

Why couldn't one of the toys

have been like a BlackBerry or like a
Nokia or something?

I would have felt even better if it had
been like

A Nokia.

an old phone.

An old phone I think would have solved
some problems.

And a Nokia? I feel like they would have
gotten some points for that.

Just to throw an old Nokia phone in there.

Or sued by Nokia. Does Nokia still exist?

I don't I don't know if they exist
anymore.

Okay. Got it.

They probably they probably own some AI
company.

I don't know.

~ who knows? The the technology was was
troubling.

But okay, how did but how did you feel the
like

Nokia

backwards is A I con. That's just what my
brain just did.

That's all. That's all I had to say.

Nokia exists today because I didn't have
time to type all the words

Mm-hmm. Yeah.

as you were talking.

It says yes, Nokia still exists today as a
major multinational telecommunications

and technology corporation, though no
longer manufactures or sells smartphones.

So I don't know what it actu what it does
actually.

~ they have five G and six G networking
equipment.

So I think the cellular companies like,

Okay. Yeah, okay. Excellent.

you know, license or whatever.

So

AI con. Brilliant. That's brilliant.

Did you get any good now, you know,

I don't know if you know my other co-host,

Jason. ~ he had thoughts about day ~

the Jesse's realization that

her owner named her real life baby after
Jesse.

Right.

And that Jesse

As

a toy left such an impression on her owner
and it made everything

I made an impact.

she no longer felt abandoned. She felt
like she made a difference in the world.

And now she's an egot. Did you by

~ huh.

the way, Nate, did you know we might be up
for a podcast award?

I'll never be an egot, but I might get a
podcast award.

Right. The Sign Signal Award?

Did you know that? I'm just saying.

That's right, the signal award.

I might be a egotz. I might get the S of
an egots.

Perfect.

Yeah. But anyway, did you did you A buy
it?

B was it good? Do you think that was good?

How did you feel about that that little
turn?

I d it didn't okay. Of course.

I I cried to be clear, even though I don't
I don't but I'm not sure if it was

Of course.

actually good. I just cried. You know,

I don't I can't judge that. I cry

Right, right. Right.

at Angels in the outfield, you know what
mean?

Like that's a good movie. They all stand
up and do the wave,

I mean you should. When we all stand up
and do the wave.

~

I do cry at that.

I also cry during disaster movies,

but go ahead.

~ so this was a toy feeling like

am I useful or I did I mean did I make a
difference?

I think what's hard for me is that we as
humans need some sort

of allegorical tie-in to like

Shm

how does this relate? Because obviously
toys are fun and cool,

but I wouldn't recommend that an adult
like

hoard their childhood toys. Maybe a few
that but like if someone said like this

toy was the most important thing to me,

I'd be like And tell me why. You named
your child after the toy.

I'd love to hear more about it.

But

Sure.

I don't look at that and be like,

Great work. You did great.

If you if you named your child after a toy
name,

did you do you remember any toys from your
childhood that you would bring that name

I would name my child Nintendo sixty four.

into

That would be the best toy to to say yeah.

I actually

no. I it'd be like this is my son Banjo
and this is my daughter Kazooie and they

Mm.

are I love them very much and my dog's
name is Broom Tilda.

That's it. This is my son

Congrats.

Goldeneye, and then my daughter Zelda.

This is my daughter odd job.

And then did you ever have the talking
doll called Corky?

Do you have any have you ever heard of
this?

No. I

The Corky doll?

knew of Teddy Rexpin, the bear that told
me stories.

Well, so this Corky doll I'm about to show
you an image ~ and and

I apologize in advance if this is tr if
this is troubling.

Okay. Troubling?

But this was a doll that my parents
thought it was fit for me to have.

so the

no. no.

corky doll, it was a Chucky was it
actually is,

It's Chucky, but without the is this what
Chucky's based off of?

Yeah, okay. That makes a lot of sense.

yes. And so Corky

you could put a

cassette tape in its back and press play
and

yeah? Just like Teddy Rexman. Yep.

and then it could like move its mouth and
talk to you.

But the problem is when the batteries
would run low,

it

Rule.

it would sound like Satan. And it would
talk in

Yeah.

slow, jarbled tones. And it was
terrifying.

This doll still exists at my parents'
house,

I believe, if you ever care to see this in
person and never sleep again.

Yeah. And your real name

But this was

is Corky Robles.

That's it. And I I actually named my
oldest son's middle name as Quarky.

No, I'm just kidding. That's not that's
not true.

So you yeah.

~ so going back to it, I

just don't think that like I couldn't find
the connection point for

me as a viewer to like connect.

Does that make sense? Like I could connect

Yeah, yeah.

to a child being rejected. I could connect
to wanting friends either

in myself or thinking about my kids.

I could connect to the friendship of Woody
and Buzz in the older movies

and this like fighting for, you know,

all this stuff. I'm not sure if I could
like I guess.

The closest connection is Jesse is dealing
with being old.

So like a connection to maybe being like,

Right.

I'm an if you're an older person,

be like, I'm no longer like, did I make a
difference in my grandchild's

Right.

life or my child's life or I'm no longer
needed or wanted?

I could see that being a connection that
maybe some people could make.

I just personally didn't have that
connection,

so I didn't

Sure.

feel much about it.

Yeah, I mean it was again like Pixar knows
how to pull on the emotions

and like make you feel something and like
you feel

the like simultaneous regret and relief
and fulfillment

of purpose and all of that just kind of
like in a moment.

Whether or not it was earned, like they're
good at like kind

of communicating it through whatever's
happening.

But I don't know if it I don't know if it
hits,

but

Yeah, her I mean like ultimately she felt
like I did make a difference.

That season is over. She says like we
don't get to choose when we're

no longer needed.

All right.

And I she like comes to grips with her toy
mortality,

I guess.

Which do toys I mean, unless they burn in
the fire from Toy Story Three,

do toys ever die? I don't Right.

I mean she's still being played with at
the end of this movie.

Exactly. Exactly.

~

I I have to tell our viewers and
listeners,

I

Yes.

have not seen Toy Story four yet.

Is there something in that movie that
tells

why Woody lives an outdoor toy life?

Why he's like a desperado out there?

~ yes.

I forgot yes, I forgot to tell you that I
forgot I connected that part because

the I forky the fork

He should be

so much grungier living outside.

I just toy life out there.

Well he's with he he's

with Bo Peep. You know, she might be
keeping him straight.

And why is she riding around in a skunk?

Do I find that out in Toy Story Four?

You have to watch Toy Story Four.

And actually Corky, the doll from my
childhood,

plays a little bit of a role in Toy Story
Four.

~ no spoilers. So there's actually s
horror vibes.

am and also am I supposed

to care about Forky at all? I I will care
more about Forky

Yes, you'll care about for you have to
watch Toy Story Four to care about Forky.

Yes, you will. You'll care about You'd
have to watch

having had Watch Toy Story four.

Okay.

Toy Story Four to care about Forky.

So here let's get to the question,

Nate. Do you think will Toy Story make
will Pixar make another Toy Story?

Yes.

A

B should they?

No.

I'm going to agree as well. I think they
managed to bring Toy Story into twenty

twenty six, comment on a real life thing,

a cultural moment of technology and
childhood.

They they said the thing, they made a good
movie,

even if it's not a great movie.

I think they should be done. I think they
should just call it here,

Toy Story Five, just just close the book.

Just, you know, close the cover.

Right?

I yes, they should. But let me tell you
something.

I have

Yes.

1.148 billion reasons why they will not
stop.

Because that is the amount of dollar bills
they made worldwide.

It is the highest grossing film in the
franchise,

the third highest

What?

grossing animated film of all time.

What are you kidding me?

So you tell me if you made one point one
four eight billion dollars worldwide,

would you be all done?

That is amazing that it well, y the
Odyssey and Spider-Man beat it this year.

Mm-hmm.

Although it did beat Devil Wears Prada 2,

Super Mario Galaxy, Project Hail Mary.

It beat it beat a lot of movies.

Yeah, they're going to make another one.

I've I don't and also

Yes. Yes, correct.

because like Disney can't stop with the
sequels.

Like they're making The Incredibles 3,

they're making Frozen 3. A lot of sequels

I'm

coming up.

let me give a hot take here.

please, please.

I think that numbered sequels should stop
at three.

Mm.

I agree I

I'm fine with spin-offs

and I'm fine with like, you know,

a Star Wars story or a like it from

Sure.

the universe, from the minds that brought
you Toy Story.

There's something

Right.

about seeing a five on this poster that
I'm looking at right now that feels

It's a bit it's a bit.

a little s there's there's feelings in
there of like,

hmm.

There's some feelings there. I think I
agree.

You know, some franchises like 007,

which none of them are numbered.

And like with

Right. Y yes.

with every reboot of a different actor,

I think it's a different thing.

And so like 007, I think, is on the side.

The Star Wars movies,

you know.

Those were

kind of just three of them.

Those are three groups of three,

so I think that I think that works.

Yeah. And I'm fine with that. Fine with
groups of three.

And then Rogue One, which is one

of the best ones out there. You know,

it just stands kind of on its own.

But like I'm looking at this article now
from Rotten Tomatoes.

Ice Age six is coming apparently soon.

They made so many Ice Age movies without
me knowing about it.

That's not an Avatar Four. ~ well,

How many despicable me how many meas
despicable are there?

there's

I think there's three Despic there's
Despicable Threes,

Despicable's three, like Attorneys
General,

Uh-huh.

and then there's the Minions and Monsters,

and then a cup maybe there's a four.

Is there a four? Hold on. Despicable Me
Four.

It came out twenty twenty four.

There's four Despicable Me's.

There you go.

Listen, I don't I don't want to get big
brain on this.

~

But I do I do hope that originality comes
back.

You know what I mean? Like I

Mm. Yeah.

do th you know, I think did you see Spider
Man Brand New Day yet?

It's out on streaming.

No, not yet.

I think that was very good. And I think it
did something different.

The Odyssey, obviously, we talked that was
our last episode.

We talked about the Odyssey. You know,

taking Greek mythology, making it y okay.

But like another frozen? Another toy
story?

Like I don't know, I feel like

Frozen's

gonna come in a pair. It's gonna be

is it?

a th a three A, three B, I believe.

I was like a a two parter. I think.

I can't I can't.

I can't. But the problem is that's gonna
make three billion dollars.

That's the problem. It's going to

Correct. Well, okay,

so let's try to not be just two middle
aged dudes feeling

like I will

Sure, sure.

say that once you have sequels that have
kind of a safe formula,

I get it from a parenting perspective of
like I feel safe

Sure.

bringing my kids to Toy Story because

Yeah.

I kind of know what's gonna happen.

Maybe they'll you know.

Maybe we'll cry, maybe we'll see toys head
towards a fiery furnace.

Yeah. It's

But for the most part,

it's gonna be like a chill experience.

I know what I'm getting. And my kids
already

Yeah. It's why I feel safe

love it.

I feel safe bringing my kids to a Dune
part three.

I know that there'll be some troubling
imagery and they might be scarred,

but it'll be worth it.

There'll be a large dude

coming out of a vat of goo and ~ there'll

That's right. No problem.

be some murder.

Timothy Chalamet, he's gonna look very
troubling.

The ~ sorry, I'm I need to avoid every the
other mommy image on the internet.

I need if AI can do anything, please just
block every the other mommy anything from

Yeah. Yes. Yes.

my visual field. At all times,

please. At all times.

I mean that's

how it should be helping us. It should be
being like,

That would be helpful. Yes. That's right.

Hey, go ahead of me. One,

Just

go

into Facebook Marketplace and find things
so I don't have to deal with the muck.

But please don't tell people where I live.

Sure.

And two, filter

out all the other mommy stuff and change
my Disney

Everywhere. Everywhere.

Plus so that I don't see American horror
stories when I'm trying to find

See that

Toy Story Five.

that's the thing. Now all that to say,

to not be the curmudgeon old dudier,

I will one thousand percent see
Incredibles three in the theater.

Abs

yeah.

absolutely. Frozen three probably not.

If they give me a zootopia, I'm taking my
kids to go see Zootopia three.

Moana three,

Those Utopia movies. I'll give you the

the animated. I still have kept my family,

like a protective parent, I've kept my
family from seeing the live action Moana.

Moana. My my kids have been marked safe
from seeing Dwayne Johnson in the wig.

Have you seen it though? Have you seen it?

Have you seen the real life the the the
real life the live action Moana?

No, not yet. Not yet.

I but my kids are excited to see it,

and I told them when it comes on Disney
Plus,

we will watch it.

I ni we need to do a follow up.

As a family. That will

I think we need to ~ we'll need to talk
about that.

that will happen. ~ Steven, do you like
this movie?

Do you like Toy Story Five?

I liked it. Let's just full on rate it.

Let's rate this on a zero

Yeah, let's do it.

to five ~ toilet toys. Is

Mm-hmm.

that is that weird? What was the what was
the

Smarty pants.

zero to three zero to five Smarty Pants?

I mean, I'm gonna give this movie a three.

Three Smarty Pants.

okay.

You know, like I think Toy Story Three is
one of the best Toy Stories.

The original

Mm-hmm.

is obviously very high up there.

So

I don't think it can reach a four or a
five level per se.

I don't

Mm-hmm.

think it's bad. And compared to many other
movies out there recently,

it's not a bad movie. I think it's
interesting.

I think it's cultural commentary.

And ~ I thun, I th I enjoyed it fine.

I'll probably watch it again with the kids
on Disney Plus.

A solid three. It's out now. Out now on
streaming.

Mm-hmm. It's out now. I'm gonna

give Toy Story 5 two and a half.

Here I

Slow. Slow.

it is kind of low, but here's the thing.

I got like 45 minutes in and I paused it
to see how far in I was because

I was like,

it's not good. That's not good.

I'm is it are we almost done here?

Are we almost done? I

Yeah, yeah.

I thought it was like had some fun,

like clever moments. I liked seeing the
buzzlight years.

On their little side quest mission.

Sure. Yes, I d I enjoyed that.

But

a lot of the times I just felt like it was
a bit soulless for me.

Like it was just like watching,

like, here's the the gang doing a thing
all together.

Which again, people liked it, made a
bajillion dollars.

That's fine. I didn't

No, it didn't. No, it did. It did.

find it particularly enjoyable,

and I remember liking Toy Story One,

Two, and Three. I'm excited to watch,

Fair. That is fair.

I'm planning to watch them.

with my son who is currently at this very
moment on

I hear it.

an iPad watching Toy Story at full volume
in the next room.

At hundred percent volume. Full volume.

No headphones. Not at all. when once you
and your son have watched all five,

are you gonna have have the younger child
experience it at least alongside

or you see Yeah yeah.

I think so. I think

so. I think that's the beauty of a a
younger child is they don't get

to choose when they're ready for things.

They just get

Right. They just

thrust into the the rooms watching this.

I hope you're okay. ~ hey, hey.

They're w yeah. Hmm.

The two year old saw Big Ursula at the end
of Little Mermaid,

and

Mm.

there was some processing that needed to
happen and it made me question

a little bit about my parenting decision
to let her be involved

Really?

in the cartoon Little Mermaid.

Experience.

Ursula's pretty intense. Did you ever see
Fern Gully?

She said big Ursula, very s

You ever Fern Gully?

~ excess Tim Curry's voice.

Terrifying.

Yes. Rest

in peace. Rip. But listen, that movie that
should be rated R.

I'm just gonna say it. I don't think
that's good for kids.

But it's just out there. You can just
watch it.

You shouldn't see that. Yeah,

kids shouldn't see that one. They
shouldn't see Brave Little Toaster.

They should not see All Dogs Go to Heaven
until

Traumatizing.

they are thirteen plus.

I will say as you as your kids are getting
that's right.

You need to be able drive a car to watch
Brave Little Toaster.

That's

as your kids are getting older,

you will ha start having times years from
now where the younger will be like,

I never saw that movie and then your older
child will be like,

We watched all the toy stories.

Like we watched them all. And then your
younger

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

child will be like, No, I didn't see them
and they'll be and they'll

Right. I was in the room. I was kind of

but they'll have this argument.

Right.

carrying stuffed animals kind of
throughout the room and dragging

Exactly.

putting them under blankets and then
watching every once in a while,

Yes. But this will be this will

but yes, no connection to it.

be the future arguments you have to look
forward to as as they ~ they have

to like did we see it or did we not?

And then just just document, you know,

keep track. You gotta keep track.

Right. And then I have to choose

at times like, All right, this movie that
I liked as a kid,

is this I remember

Right.

it fondly, but if I go back into it,

is this gonna be problematic in a lot of
ways?

Unsure.

You gotta vid

angel it. You gotta vid angel it.

Nate is morally opposed.

No thank you. Are my kids

ready for Angels in the Outfield?

Maybe. Do I have

I don't know. I mean I

to talk about the fact that this kid in
foster care has a dad who like tells

him we'll be a family together when
something impossible happens and he thinks
it's

Yeah.

real, but his dad's never going to my
goodness.

As a kid, I

See that.

did not take that in quite ~ with severity

No. No.

that it needed.

That was tough. I with Chris Lloyd
Christopher Lloyd is in that movie,

right? He's he's he's the

head angel. Al, Al. I should watch that
with my kids.

We have not seen Angels in the outfield.

We should do that one. I think they're
ready.

think your kids are ready. It has the ~

really? A home From Home Alone.

Home Alone. Yeah. She's the foster mom.

Yeah.

~ that's right. Angels in the outfield,

nineteen ninety four. Nate,

Danny Glover, yeah.

we are so old. Do you realize that?

We are ancient. Ancient. Brenda Fricker.

So so old. We are like old

toys with bald back of his head.

Listen, I want to tell you

That's right. Yeah.

something. You can make one bald patch
joke for Woody in this movie and it's
funny.

You cannot make four of them. They

You cannot

are no longer funny.

That's right. Diminishing returns.

Diminishing return. Yes. Same.

diminishing returns. And listen,

I'm a bald guy. I love a good bald joke.

And yet?

Same. Joseph

Yeah. Joseph Gordon Levitt is in Angels in
the Outfield.

I did not realize that. And Tony Danza.

yeah, he's the he's the main guy.

The main kid. He's the pitcher.

Wow.

He's the pitcher. He's the picture.

Okay, anyway, I'm gonna stop looking at a
